Research at least four different creative pieces (of
different genres) about 9/11 (songs, poems, short stories, artwork, etc.). In
your post, make sure to include the genre, title, and author/creator of each
text that you chose along with your interpretation/reflection of each text. In
addition, include your sources in MLA format.
If
you used videos, pictures, artwork, etc. already in the previous blogs
you may reuse them! Just include your interpretation/reflection on
each!
Short Story
ReplyDeleteDeLillo, Don. Fiction (short story), “Still-Life,’ The New Yorker, 9 April 2007, p. 63.
This short story is about a man who survives the 9/11 attacks and chooses to move back home with his divorced wife and son. He arrived at home after the attacks covered with blood, glass and ash – preferring his family over going straight to the hospital.
Classical Music
‘Pieces of 9/11, Memories from Houston’. The Houston Grand Opera presented the premiere of this song series from the composer Jake Heggie and the songwriter Gene Scheer. The music was based on stories of Houston natives who were affected by 9/11 and honor those who died that day. It also acknowledges rescue teams and community members, such as the Houston Fire Department and Texas Task Force One, which sent 88 members to ground zero.
Heggie said that his music was influenced by the stories and personalities of the people interviewed. The overture was based on Bach’s G Major cello suite, yet the songs have folk and rock influences. This piece was written for flute, violin, guitar and cello because the instruments can easily be taken anywhere. These performances can be held in any location such as fire stations, town halls, churches and even outdoors.
Play
‘Sweet and Sad’ is a play written and directed by Richard Nelson. In the play, a liberal family, The Apples, is having s and remembrance over Sunday brunch on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The play ran for three weeks at the Public Theater in New York (September 6-25, 2011). The author points out how world events such as 9/11 are altered and reflected in our own homes in ways we’re not always aware of. “Sweet and Sad” dares to ask questions about our responses to 9/11 that we might be afraid to tackle ourselves, such as the definitions of victim and hero.
Dance
9/11 Dance: A Roving Memorial’ (Sept. 11). Sarah Skaggs Dance transforms her solo piece, “Dances for Airports,” choreographed immediately after 9/11, into a large-scale public art project to be performed at the same time at Union Square, Washington Square Park and Battery Park in New York City; in the atrium of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC; and in the Flight 93 National Memorial Park in Shanksville, Pennyslvania.

Nick Romano Blog #6
ReplyDeletePeople all over the world had an experience on September 11 2001 that they will never forget; these experiences vary from person to person. Some people want to keep their experience to themselves while others want to share their experience or others with the world. People do it through Song, Art, storytelling, poetry and much more.
Bruce Springsteen the Rising Genre: Music,Song
One example of this is Brue Springsteens song “The Rising”. Bruce Springsteen wrote the song “The rising” in reaction to the 9-11 terrorists and how the attacks impacted the country and how the country rised up and stood together as one. Springsteens song “The Rising” was released in 2002 and became a hit. I think this song is a perfect song for 9-11 and helps tell the story of the pain this country went through and how we all must rise up as a nation threw time like that. This song is a teaching to always keep faith, hope and love. It can also be said that this song was written to be told through the eyes of a firefighter. The first verse is talking about the firefighters journey up the stairs of the world trade center that day, they can’t see anything in front of them or behind them, they make their way through the dark and feel around for guiding, they see how high they have climbed and see how far they are from safety. The chorus “come on up from the rising” describes the feeling when the firefighter saves someone and how they are safe and they are free from the fire. This song can relate to people who personally experienced them 9-11 attacks and for people around the world. First reaction was sadness and feeling of emptiness and lost and as the country came together, we rised up.
“Nine Innings From Ground Zero” by Ouisie Shapiro. Genre: Movie/Film/Documentary
Another example of a genre based on September 11th 2001 is the film “Nine innings from ground zero” written by Ouisie Shapiro.Which highlights the attacks on the world trade center in a different way Nine Innings From Ground Zero shows how the nation came together that day through baseball. No matter how much cities and teams disliked everyone came together as a nation. Everyone came together to help heal the country that took a big wound. The documentary showed how during this national tragedy, we found healing from sports and a way to escape from the truth. It was something that everyone could share, the love they had for baseball and how everyone stopped to watch as a country. Also the feeling of having the Yankees in the world series and after what New York went through, was healing for a lot of family members victims who were also Yankee Fans, Personally I loved this documentary, I could relate to it as a baseball fan and also being young it gave me a different but interesting perspective of 9-11, The documentary had personal stories from the families of the victims and it brought me closer to 9-11 hearing stories from the people who experienced 9-11 directly.
Wislawa Szymborska”Photograph from September 11” Genre: Poetry
People also expressed their experiences of 9-11 through poetry; one example of this is Polish poet Wisława Szymborska “Photograph from September 11.” In his poem he starts off by talking about the people, who jumped from the burning floors of the World Trade Center, then he mentions the photograph taken of them and how it stops them and it keeps them. As if they already hit the ground, they are still there in the air, in the same position in the air. Szymborska feels the need to “freeze” the falling man in the moments before his death. I found the poem very interesting, I can relate to this and I think anyone can, when a love one dies we are extremely sadden and we pray that we can one time talk to them again. The photo of the falling man is desire to freeze or to stop a love ones death. As if freezing the man will give him for time, more time for us to be with are love ones. Wisława Szymborska picture of the falling man is also in the novel “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”.

Delete“Eyes on New York” Tony Trigg Genre:Art
DeleteArt is also another way to express feelings about 9-11.Tony Trigg’s painting “Eyes on New York” is an example of how people expressed their self after 9-11. The location in the painting is the World Trade Center. In the painting there is a lot of smoke along with faces that seem to be the victims of the attack. These people are coming from the World Trade center and what it seems like that the smoke is lifting them up to heaven. There are faces looking through the tower, the faces seem to be the people responsible for this and how are looking for more harm. Overall the painting is dark and gloomy to show all the people who died, every person involved are victims or terrorists who died in the tower. This painting sums up the September 11th 2001. It is dark, there is smoke coming out and a lot of people were lost. The people in the painting lost their life on September 11th 2001 and their souls are now rising up to the heaven.

Song of 9/11
ReplyDeleteA Hero
A charity song for children who lost
a fire-fighter/police parent in the 911 attack.
The morning froze in silence
as the terror filled our hearts
we stared in disbelief at what we saw.
Through the dust we felt so helpless,
wishing that we could have known.
We hold our families close, as we watched them fall.
Some people didn't waiver, they had a job to do.
There was nothing that could keep them away...
Oh, it's a special kind of hero
who would sacrifice themselves - so I could spend another day with you.
And for all the fallen heroes who saved a life that day
your courage unites a nation, and we'll remember you.
So many people crying, walking in a daze
holding pictures of their loved ones
through an empty haze.
Our Heroes didnt falter, they held out a helping hand
remembering their own children, as they rushed inside again.
They didnt waiver, they had a job to do
and some never made it home that day.
Oooh well remember you. We honor you, salute,
respect and cherish you.
Not many people can do the duty that
you knew on that cold September day.
The song describes the day and how it was like a dream, people didn’t believe it. Some folks who were brave enough to go and save someone. It is a touching song but also good as it is dedicated to heroes
Poem
My whole world is falling down
Nine one one, nine one one.
In smoke and debris our loved ones drown
Nine one one, we say.
Husbands, brothers, sons, and dads
Nine one one, nine one one,
Wives and sisters, daughters, moms,
All come to help that day.
Senseless deaths from hate and war,
Nine one one, nine one one,
In our homeland or yonder shore,
When will it go away?
Our children need us to be there,
Nine one, one, nine one, one,
To give them tender love and care
that drives their fears away.
How tragic it was when everyone on that day was trying to help as 911 is repeatedly. Shows that the parents need to be there for theor children to confront and care for them and wash away the fear of that day.
Song: Him, Lilly Allen
ReplyDeleteThis song is about God, however it discusses the September 11 attacks. The singer is talking about how different beliefs about God has caused so many awful catastrophes. She mentions 9/11 because the terrorists annihilated many innocent people just because of the terrorist's warped take on their religion.
Poem: Daddy's Day
This is a poem written about a girl who lost her father in the 9/11 attacks. It is told from the perspective of the girl and it takes place on father's day. Everybody is doing presentations on their fathers and it is her turn. She ends up telling the class why he could not be there that day. She says that he was a fireman who died while trying to help people in the twin towers. This poem is both touching and sad because it shows the terrible effects of 9/11 on a young elementary school girl. People at such a young age do not know how to deal with death and after 9/11 many children were dealing with similar issues.
Art: Picture of Superman
I found a picture of the twin towers with an injured superman in front of them holding a torn American flag. I thought this picture was very symbolic. Superman, who is an emblem of strength, modesty, and goodwill appears to be grieving by the horrific 9/11 attack at the twin towers. The torn apart american flag symbolizes how Americans were harmed by the 9/11 attacks.
Poem:A Tribute to "The Entenmann's Lady"
This poem is a very accurate description of the true meaning of a hero. It is written about a woman named Susan Vitti who as soon as she heard news of 9/11 on t.v, drove to the first aid building and did all she possibly could to save the victims of 9/11. The poem says that anyone can be a hero, but they need to give all they possibly can. It says that Susan was a true hero because she put others needs above her own. She knew what the victims were going through and tried her hardest to help them no matter what.

Song
ReplyDelete“The rising”
By Bruce Springsteen
The song is about Bruce Springsteen’s experience during 9/11. I found this song interesting because during the 9/11 attack while Bruce was driving home he had a short encounter with a man that drove up to him and rolled down his window and said to him that “we need you now”, which inspired him to write this song on what he saw during the bombing.
Poem
A tribute to “the Entenmann’s lady”
By Elaine the songwriter
This poem is about how there were many heroes that did not survive in 9/11 because they decided to helped others. Even though they knew the horror and suffering that they were going to go threw they still risked their lives to save many people. Elaine gave an example in here poem, of a woman named, Suzan who was one of those heroes . I found this interesting because no one is able to acknowledge the people that died to help others.

The Falling Man’s descent into eternity
By Richard Drew
This picture shows a man committing suicide by jumping from one of the Twin Towers. I find this interesting because this man had a decision whether he had wanted to make an attempt out of the burning building or to die peacefully.
Artwork
Chaos
by Gloria Nye
This artwork is of New York City but it is in the colors of red, white, and blue. I think that the man who had made this, was representing the great city and the two beautiful buildings which were just destroyed. I found it interesting the Chaos was making a skyline with the American flag colors and before he knew it rose to become a city.

1. Song: “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning on the September Day” written and sung by Alan Jackson, talks about other people’s experience during 9/11 and how it effected them. He describes the emotions that were involved as well as how others reactions were to it who lived further away. Incorporating his strong religious background, he talks about how God and that even though something so tragic was able to be caused, God brought love to all the families who lost loved ones during 9/11.
ReplyDelete2. Poem: “Cross Amidst the Ruins”, written by Marge Batzer talks about the anger that many had towards this horrific event, but how even with something so terrible there was a “silver lining”. Thousands of people’s lives were lost, but hundreds were also saved.
3. Documentary: HBO Documentary Film presented a segment called “Beyond 9/11- Portraits of Resilience”. Targeting four middle age men who survived the 9/11 attacks. Each story was different, but all of their reactions were the same. Explaining what they saw from the south building while the North building was in flames and what their immediate reactions were towards getting out of the building. All of them kept calm during their evacuation, but doubt ran high the entire time. Getting out safely came to each men as a huge shock as close co workers of theirs were not as fortunate.
4. Painting: A painting by Alexander Byron of Marion was placed on a billboard in Cape Cod along the Cranberry Highway near the Bourne line, memorializing the attacks from 9/11 by incorporating three firefighters holding up an American flag near World Trade Center ruins. More than 20 people with ties to the Cape or islands died in the terrorist attacks in New York and the Pentagon, so having such a large painting up on a billboard helps to commemorate their lives.

Song/Into The Fire/Bruce Springsteen
ReplyDeleteReleased in 2002, from Springsteen’s album The Rising, into the fire is a song about a firefighter climbing up the towers to rescue victims. The lyrics are told from a widow of a firefighter. She explains “I heard you calling me when you disappeared into the dust”. I think the song shows how loved ones imagined their spouses or family members dying, down with the dust of the towers, and how much they wished they could have a few last moments with them. The lyrics also thank the rescue workers for the strength, and faith, and believe that their strength gave their loved ones strength as well.
Poem/I Hold In My Hands/Aaron Walsh
After the attacks, eleven-year-old Aaron wrote a poem about how it affected him. In his poem he describes how even though he was not there, he holds in his hands the dust, and the future from the WTC. He also explains that he doesn’t know what his future holds. I think this poem greatly expresses how younger children were affected by the attacks and how they translate in their minds. I also like how he says even though he wasn’t there; he felt it, just like the rest of the world that day. He also mentions that there might be a war in the future due to the attacks, which has happened.
Movie/United 93
United 93 was another hijacked plain possibly heading for the white house on 9/11. However, due to the passengers’ heroism, they created a plan to try and attack the hijackers and try to reroute the plane. I have seen this movie, and I personally think it greatly depicts the fear, stress, and heroism that surrounded that day. It shows normal, everyday, innocent people stepping up and possibly risking their own lives for the sake of others. The heroism of that day was greatly appreciated and remembered, and this movie was a great memorial for it.
Art (Picture)/Man Kneeling at Memorial
The picture shows a man, or father, kneeling beside the memorial pools at the 9/11 Memorial, and his hand is where his son’s name is etched. It was taken in 2011 on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. His face shows great sorrow and loss. I think this picture shows how even 10 years later, no one has forgotten what happened that day. Also, people are still grieving the loss of their loved ones. I also like how it shows the effectiveness of the memorial. You can always be with the deceased with their names engraved in the side of the pool. The pools are a great memorial for those whose lives were taken.

Song
ReplyDeleteInto the Fire
Bruce Springsteen
This is a song about the aftermath of 9/11 and people trying to regain their emotions after that day. Springsteen is saying that the strength, faith. Hope, and love shown by the heroes on 9/11 should inspire the rest of the world to use these same traits in their everyday lives. Several times in the song he talks about how when their duty called them they saved many lives at the expense of their own, even though there loved ones would have liked to see them save themselves instead of others. Bruce Springsteen is saying that we should honor the memories of the dead heroes by always acting like them.
Poem
Calling All Angels
Lea MacDonald
This poem is in remembrance of all the fallen heroes on September 11th and how they are all angels and god is looking down on them always. It is saying that they as made god proud on that day and now they are all angels and should be recognized like that because of their heroic actions.
Artwork
The Hero
Khai Nguyen
This is a painting of a New York City fire fighter after 9/11. He is kneeling down amongst the fallen buildings and touching something that isn’t really visible. I like this painting because it clearly shows a fireman but it also always the audience to make things up about the painting and the man like what he is touching at that moment.
Photograph
The Three Firefighters
This picture shows three New York fire fighters raising an American Flag over the fallen Twin Towers bellow their feet. This is a very symbolic photo because it shows the American resolve and that no matter how bad things get we will always stand united under the flag, like the fire fighters did that day.

Song: The Rising'/'My City of Ruins'
ReplyDeleteArtist: Bruce Springsteen
This songs reflects that while 9/11 people were scattered and they hiding in the corners for safety. There was blood and doors were blown up. Bruce Springsteen is also saying that people who have never even met each other were brothers at that time and they were on their knees. People were remembering god and asking for strength from the lord. This song also explains that the city was ruined and we should rise up.
Poem: “WTC 9/11”
Writer: Cristen o’ keefe
This poem reflects 9/11 by telling that people dint even know what was going to happen that morning and people who watched the event on their televisions they were terrified. Cristen explains that they were calling friends and family member. They were trying to contact relatives asking them if they were okay. The people in the poem were only watching the news and saw the victims die.

This picture shows that before the attack the twin towers were present and after the attack they were gone but it also shows that after the attack people became more patriot and hung American flags everywhere. This picture also shows that America is more united than before.

The song the rising was inspired by a random civilian. Bruce said that he was so inspired that a man was coming up to him in need and that was all he needed to write this song. This was just after 9/11 happened and the planes hit.
ReplyDeleteThe painting was about how the United States weren't very untied before the attacks and after the 9/11 attacks everyone was untied. If you lived in america you were and American that day. Even if you didn't lose anyone in the towers or lose anyone you know you felt the pain of the people who did lose a family member. At Comerica park when he news that Osama had been killed roughly 10 years after the attacks well the hole stadium got into a collective chant " USA, USA, USA"
The story was about her experience that she had form the towers. The feeling that her husband would never come home and he never did. Her husband was in the north tower and was in it during the attacks, when she saw the report on the new she her husband was still in their and hoped by god he was out of the building for food or something. Well her family came over and tried to keep her company and comfort her as she waited for him to come home.
The poem is about a lady who saved the lives of people and risked her life for them. She is one of the people you wouldn't hesitate and call her a true American Hero. She went in before being asked if she could help anyone. She definitely fits my definition of a true American hero with is someone who goes above and beyond expectations and will risk everything for people in need.

ReplyDeleteThe poem “Disaster in America” by Andrea Yehle recaptures the tragic events of 9/11. The first stanza of the poem discusses the grief and sorrow that overtakes the victims’ family and friends. The second stanza points out the amount of shock the victims felt. The third stanza reviews the recovery time a few days after, where bodies were being found and identified. The last two stanzas point to how they were important members of our country and we always be missed. I thought this poem was a good reflection on the tragic events of 9/11. It was simple and easy to understand/connect with.
“The 9/11 Silent Night Song” was completed by an unknown author. This song is an individual remember the affect 9/11 had on them individually. Unlike the last piece, which was a poem discussed the profound affect it had on our entire nation. She feels as though she had a connection with all of those who died. She said she was on every plane that crashed and in every building that got hit. I thought this was a really interesting way to think of it. She feels a small part of her died with every death on that tragic day. She recounts how the families who first heard the news felt. This song definitely is easier to connect with on a personal level than the first poem.
The painting done by Todd Stone attached to the article written by Tom Sutcliffe depicts the scene at ground zero minutes after the attack. Sutcliffe chose to include that painting in his article because he believed it accurately depicted the frightening scene in New York City. Stone chose to focus his painting on the dust and smoke cloud. Sutcliffe would go on to say that not only did the heavy cloud block everybody’s vision but also blocked sound. I thought this piece was a great representation for the disastrous events from that day. The cloud is a good symbol for how people felt after the attacks. They felt lonely and unable to connect with their loved ones and fellow countrymen.
The poem “American Eagle” by Dianna Wilder uses symbolism to convey how the nation feels about 9/11. She says she looked at a poster and saw an eagle with a tear running down its face and two towers behind the eagle burning. I enjoyed looking at this poem because it doesn’t directly describe what happened, but rather allows the reader to infer and have their own interpretation on the events. I also like how it ends in a positive manner, saying our country can bounce back from this devastation.

Heaven (9/11)
ReplyDeleteBy: DJ Sammy
This song is a remix to DJ Sammy’s original song heaven. This song is special in particular because it includes the voice of a little girl talking about her father she had lost in the 9/11 attacks. This demonstrates the impact that 9/11 had on even the littlest children. This girl updates her father on big things that her dad had missed in the last year including her being able to swim, and swing on a swingset by herself even though she still misses her father.
Words I Never Said
By: Lupe Fiasco
In Lupe Fiasco’s song, “Words I Never Said”, he shares his views on the 9/11 attacks and the war on terror. He raps, “I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit. Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets. How much money does it take to really make a full clip. 9/11 building 7 did they really pull it. Uhh, And a bunch of other cover ups”. He talks about how much he dislikes the war on terror and how it is a poor excuse. It is almost as if he is saying that the U.S. should not fight fire with fire by entering a war.
The Rising
By: Bruce Springsteen
In Bruce Springsteen’s song, “The Rising”, he talks about the 9/11 attacks and how American lives were impacted from that day onward. This song focuses particularly on the physical attacks and how traumatizing they were. He sings, “Can't see nothin' in front of me. Can't see nothin' coming up behind. I make my way through this darkness. I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me. Lost track of how far I've gone. How far I've gone, how high I've climbed. On my back's a sixty pound stone. On my shoulder a half mile line”. When he says he cannot see anything ahead or behind him he is speaking of the physical smoke entering throughout the buildings.
